Day Two: Intensify Prayers
As we enter our second day in this Lenten Period, St. Paul urges us to make our prayers and supplications known to God, encouraging us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17, NABRE). In this spiritual desert where we accompany Jesus through His forty days of trial, we are called to intensify our prayers. If you once prayed once a day, strive now to pray twice, thrice, or even four times daily. Increase the hours spent in intimate conversation with God, deepening that relationship and keeping the bond strong and alive.
We are urged to set aside dedicated moments each day for intense, focused prayer. St. Paul warns us that “Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for [someone] to devour” (1 Peter 5:8, NABRE), so we must remain vigilant and steadfast. Jesus Himself spent His forty days in the desert praying, fasting, and strengthening His soul through communion with the Father. We, too, must imitate Him: as we discipline and starve our physical bodies through fasting, we must nourish and feed our souls with the Word of God and persistent prayer.
We are reminded to “put on the armor of light” (Romans 13:12, NABRE) and to stand ready to resist the enemy. Let us pray that we may gird our loins with truth, keep watch in prayer, and never be caught off guard.
Let us pray:
Lord Jesus, You who conquered the desert and defeated the tempter through prayer and obedience to the Father, we acknowledge that without You we can do nothing. Grant us the strength and perseverance to walk faithfully through these forty days of Lent. Inflame our hearts with a deeper love for prayer; increase our faith and help us to make our relationship with You the center of every day. Teach us to listen attentively to Your voice, to follow Your commandments with fervor and joy, and to resist every snare of the devil with courage and trust. Guard us from spiritual slumber, keep us vigilant in watchfulness, and never let us be separated from Your love. Jesus, I Trust In You! Amen.
