Come to Me, All Who Labor
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” —Matthew 11:28
Christ’s invitation is tender, yet transformative: “Come to me, all who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” These words speak to every weary soul, to every heart weighed down by sin, guilt, worry, or the struggles of life. In a world that often praises self-reliance and busyness, Jesus calls us to surrender our burdens to Him.
Rest is not merely physical; it is spiritual renewal, an encounter with God’s peace that surpasses all understanding. It is the rest that the saints knew, who, in the midst of trials, found solace in prayer, the sacraments, and intimate trust in God. St. Teresa of Γvila wrote that the soul must find its quiet center in God, where even the storm of life cannot disturb its peace.
Consider those who came to Jesus in need. The blind, the lame, the suffering, and the oppressed—all were invited to approach Him. He did not send them away. He welcomed them, healed them, and restored their dignity. So, too, He invites you: “Come to Me.” No sin is too great, no sorrow too heavy, no fear too deep.
When we bring our burdens to Christ, we are not merely offloading our problems; we are entrusting them to the One who holds all power and wisdom. Think of Simon Peter, who in the storm cried out:
“Lord, save me!”
And Jesus reached out His hand to steady him. The disciples in the boat experienced fear and despair, yet Jesus’ presence brought immediate peace. Our souls, too, are calmed when we let Him take our burdens, replacing anxiety with trust and fatigue with His sustaining grace.
Faith requires courage: the courage to admit weakness, the humility to surrender, and the trust to lean on Him alone. Are we willing to let go of self-sufficiency, to acknowledge that we cannot bear every weight on our own? God invites us to this surrender, not as a punishment, but as a path to true freedom.
Rest in Christ also calls us to discipleship. We learn to walk in His footsteps, to carry His yoke, which is gentle and light. In surrender, we discover the paradox of Christian life: by giving our burdens to God, we are strengthened to serve, love, and persevere in ways we could not on our own.
Lord Jesus, You invite me to come to You with my burdens and weariness.
Teach me to surrender fully to Your loving care.
Take my anxieties, my fears, my doubts, and my sins, and replace them with Your peace, joy, and strength.
Help me trust in Your providence and to rest in Your presence, knowing that Your yoke is gentle and Your burden is light.
Grant me the courage to let go of self-sufficiency and embrace the freedom that comes from leaning fully on You.
Amen.
Come to Me, O weary soul,
Bring every burden, every toll.
Lay down your fears, your doubt, your strife,
Receive My peace, the rest of life.
Like Peter in the storming sea,
Cry out in faith, and cling to Me.
My hand will steady, My love will heal,
All broken hearts, all wounds I seal.
My yoke is gentle, My burden light,
I lead you safely through the night.
Trust and surrender, give Me all,
I lift you up when you fall.
No weight too heavy, no cross too great,
I hold your life, I guide your fate.
Come, weary soul, to Me, your rest,
In My embrace, you are blessed.
Rest in My presence, be renewed,
Your heart restored, your strength imbued.
Walk in My ways, with faith alive,
Through Me, your soul will thrive.
