When God Forgives, He Forgets
One day as I was scrolling through my Twitter timeline, I came across a very interesting article. Sadly, I didn’t save it or remember the exact person who wrote it, but the story stuck with me deeply.
It was about a man who went to God in prayer, made a sincere confession, and obtained complete absolution for his sins. He left filled with joy and peace. But upon reaching home, he began to wonder about something he had often heard: “God forgives and forgets.” He thought to himself, “I want to see how true this is.”
So, he deliberately went and committed the very same sin he had confessed the previous day. The next day, burdened with guilt, he returned to God, lamenting and weeping bitterly. God asked him, “My child, what troubles you so deeply this time?”
The man replied, “My God, it is the same sin… the very same sin You forgave me for yesterday. I have fallen again!”
But God looked at him tenderly and said:
“My child, I don’t actually remember anything. I don’t remember the sin you are speaking of. I don’t even recall when I forgave you last time. You see, whenever I forgive, I forget. I erase it completely. You become reborn, a new creation, after confession.”
The man was so amazed, and his faith grew stronger. He finally understood the depth of God’s mercy — that when God forgives, He truly forgets. As Scripture says:
“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” (Isaiah 1:18)
In the Sacrament of Confession, God does not hold our sins against us anymore. He wipes them away entirely, making us new, spotless, and free — as white as snow.
