Trusting God’s Will in Prayer, Embracing Suffering, and Overcoming Temptation
Suffering: A Kiss from God
Suffering is not merely a burden—it can be a gentle kiss from God, a loving reminder of how deeply He cares for us. When we learn to embrace it early, it becomes a blessing for both our souls and our lives.
Many of us tend to feel discouraged when tormented by trials, hardships, and pain; yet, such discouragement only pleases the devil, who seeks to weaken our faith. Instead, we are called to remain steadfast, knowing that every moment we persevere draws us closer to God and brings Him joy.
π James 1:12 — “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”
π¬ St. Ignatius of Loyola — “If God sends you many sufferings, it is a sign that He has great plans for you and certainly wants to make you a saint.”
Suffering, when united to Christ’s Cross, can be our source of redemption. It purifies the heart, deepens faith, and teaches us to surrender our will to God’s will. Jesus Himself prayed in Gethsemane:
π Luke 22:42 — “Not my will, but yours be done.”
π¬ St. Teresa of Γvila — “We always find that those who walked closest to Christ were those who had to bear the greatest trials.”
π 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 — “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
Prayer According to God’s Will
One important truth about prayer is that God does not always answer in the way we expect. He responds according to His perfect will, not our limited desires.
You might pray for someone to change — and sometimes God grants that transformation — but this is not the case for everyone. You may have faith, yet what you are asking might not be what God has planned for your life.
"We do not pray to change God’s decree, but to obtain what He has willed to grant through prayer."
π 2 Corinthians 12:9 — “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
When God’s answer is “not yet” or “no,” His silence is not neglect — it is often His way of preparing something far better than what we imagined. Our part is to remain faithful, trust His timing, and submit to His will.
God’s Faithfulness in Temptation
π 1 Corinthians 10:13 — “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
Temptation is never greater than God’s grace to overcome it. The problem is not God’s absence but our lack of courage and faith to resist. Temptation itself is not sin — it becomes sin when we yield to it. God always provides a “way of escape,” but we must choose it.
Examples of Standing Firm
Joseph in Egypt (Genesis 39:6–12) — Fled from Potiphar’s wife to avoid sin.
Daniel (Daniel 1:8–16) — Chose purity and God rewarded his faithfulness.
Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1–11) — Defeated Satan’s temptations with Scripture.
Examples of Falling
Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:1–6) — Believed the serpent’s lie over God’s truth.
David and Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11) — Lust led to adultery and murder.
What lessons does it draw for us?
1. Temptation will come — even Jesus faced it.
2. God always provides a way out — but we must take it.
3. Faith must be active — resist with prayer, Scripture, and sometimes physical separation from the source.
4. Falling is not final — repentance restores us if we learn from failure.
Wisdom from the Saints
π¬ St. John Vianney — “The devil only tempts those who wish to abandon sin; those who are in mortal sin belong to him already.”
π¬ St. Philip Neri — “In temptation, say, ‘Jesus, help me,’ and immediately you will feel stronger.”
π¬ St. Augustine — “By yielding to temptation, our enemy becomes stronger; by resisting it, he becomes weaker.”
Do I see suffering as a punishment or as a loving gift that purifies me?
When my prayers go unanswered, do I trust God’s plan or become impatient?
How can I better prepare myself to resist temptation this week?
Lord Jesus, in moments of suffering, teach me to see Your hand and not just my pain. Help me to accept trials as gifts that purify and draw me closer to You. When my prayers are not answered as I desire, remind me that Your will is higher than mine and that Your plans for me are always good. Give me the grace to embrace suffering with love, to remain steadfast in faith, and to resist every temptation by holding fast to Your Word. Strengthen me in trials, keep me faithful in prayer, and lead me to eternal victory in Your love. Amen.
