Everyone We Meet Has a Lesson to Teach
God’s Divine Appointments
There is a saying that goes: “We do not meet by mistake.” At first, this may seem hard to believe—especially when we encounter people who bring us pain or disappointment. In such moments, it is easy to curse the day we met them or wish we had never crossed paths. But nothing happens by chance. God allows every person to enter our lives for a reason, to teach us something important for our spiritual and personal growth.
Every person we meet plays a role in shaping who we are. Some remain in our lives forever; others only for a season—but each leaves a mark and a lesson. Too often, we fail to recognize the value of these lessons until the person is gone.
People teach us in many ways:
✍️ Through pain, we learn strength, resilience, and endurance.
✍️ Through encouragement, we discover confidence and courage.
✍️ Through opposition or betrayal, we learn forgiveness, humility, and reliance on God.
✍️ Through love and care, we understand gratitude, compassion, and loyalty.
✍️ Through challenges, we learn patience, obedience, trust, and faith.
Sometimes God sends people to help us see our own potential. They bring out talents, gifts, and abilities we never realized we had. Other times, He sends people to draw us closer to Him, reminding us that our ultimate guide and teacher is Christ Himself.
Scripture reminds us of God’s purpose in the people He places in our lives:
“For everything, there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” (Proverbs 27:17)
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
Even when relationships are painful or challenging, God is at work, using those interactions to refine our character, strengthen our faith, and teach us vital lessons.
St. Teresa of Avila encouraged discernment in all relationships, noting that God uses both friends and adversaries to teach us humility and dependence on Him.
St. John Chrysostom reminded the faithful that even those who oppose or annoy us can be teachers of patience, mercy, and self-control.
St. Faustina Kowalska emphasized that every person we meet can become an instrument of grace in our lives if we open our hearts to God’s will.
The key lesson is simple: be grateful for every person God brings into your life. Whether they bring joy or pain, they are instruments in His hands, shaping you into the person He wants you to become.
When we see life through this lens, we stop asking, “Why did I meet this person?” and start asking, “What is God teaching me through this encounter?” Gratitude transforms our perspective. It allows us to learn, grow, and walk with humility, love, and patience.
Every person we meet has a lesson to teach. Some show us our strength, some our weaknesses, some guide us closer to God, and others challenge us to grow in faith and patience. Even difficult people are God’s instruments for our growth.
When we embrace this truth, we stop seeing encounters as accidents or burdens. Instead, we see them as divine appointments, opportunities to learn, grow, and become more Christlike. Let us be grateful for everyone God brings into our lives, knowing that each person, for a season or a lifetime, is part of His perfect plan.
Heavenly Father,
I thank You for every person You place in my life.
Help me to see the lessons You are teaching me through each encounter,
whether through joy, love, challenge, or pain.
Grant me a grateful heart, patience to learn, and humility to grow.
May I become a better reflection of Your love through every relationship.
Amen.
