Chapter 6

Mary and the Life of the Baptized — Devotion to the Miraculous Medal

When we are baptized into Christ, we are also given a spiritual Mother—Mary. She who bore the Savior also helps to nurture His life in us. As the Mother of the Church and the Mother of all the baptized, Mary plays an essential role in the journey of transformation.

“Behold, your mother!” — John 19:27

Mary’s Role in Our Baptized Life

Mary is not just a historical figure but a spiritual reality in our faith journey. As the first and most faithful disciple of Jesus, she teaches us how to:

Surrender fully to God’s will

Embrace suffering with trust

Stay close to Jesus in prayer and in service

She intercedes for us, protects us, and leads us to her Son. Just as she nurtured Jesus physically, she nurtures us spiritually through her prayers and presence.

The Miraculous Medal: A Gift from Heaven

In 1830, the Blessed Virgin appeared to St. Catherine LabourΓ© in Paris and gave her the design of a medal now known as the Miraculous Medal. Mary promised great graces to those who wear it with faith and devotion.

Meaning of the Medal

Mary standing on the globe represents her universal queenship.

Rays of light from her hands are the graces she gives to those who ask.

The “M” and the Cross symbolize her close union with Jesus.

The two hearts represent the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Why Wear the Medal?

It is a visible reminder of Mary’s protection.

It strengthens one’s identity as a child of Mary.

It invites graces to help us in our spiritual battles.

It is a silent profession of faith in Mary’s intercession.

Mary’s Role in Spiritual Warfare

The devil fears Mary. Her humility crushes his pride. Her purity repels his impurity. Her obedience defeats his rebellion. The baptized who cling to Mary are well-armed in spiritual battle.

“The Rosary is the weapon for these times.” — St. Padre Pio

Devotion to Mary does not distract us from Jesus—it draws us deeper into His love. She always says, “Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5).

Saints Devoted to Mary

St. Louis de Montfort promoted total consecration to Jesus through Mary.

St. Maximilian Kolbe founded the Militia Immaculata and died offering his life for another in imitation of Mary’s self-gift.

St. John Paul II’s motto was Totus Tuus (“Totally Yours”), expressing his full trust in Mary’s guidance.

How to Live Marian Devotion as a Baptized Christian

Pray the Rosary daily

Wear the Miraculous Medal faithfully

Consecrate yourself to Mary’s Immaculate Heart

Imitate her virtues: humility, purity, silence, and obedience

Ask her to help you love Jesus more deeply

To be baptized into Christ is to be part of the family of God. Mary is our Mother in that family. The more we draw close to her, the more she forms us into the image of her Son. Wearing the Miraculous Medal is not superstition—it is a sign of trust in the heavenly help that God has provided through Mary.

Let Mary walk with you. Let her prayers guide you. Let her love transform you.

“Never be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her more than Jesus did.” — St. Maximilian Kolbe
