Mary, Model Mother and Mediatrix of Grace

On this day we celebrate our earthly mothers, we also lift our eyes to the one who embodies perfect motherhood Mary, the Mother of God. Her example is not only timeless but deeply relevant for today’s mothers and for all the faithful who long to grow closer to Christ. She is both the model of maternal love and the Mediatrix of all graces, the one who nurtured Jesus in the flesh and continues to intercede for us from her throne in Heaven.

Mary, the Model for All Mothers

From the moment she said "yes" to the angel Gabriel, Mary became the first to embrace God's plan with full trust. She bore the Son of God with humility, raised Him with love, and remained with Him even in His suffering. Mary’s motherhood was not only biological; it was deeply spiritual, filled with unshakable faith, contemplative prayer, and sacrificial love.

She taught Jesus how to pray. She showed Him how to walk, how to live among others, how to observe the traditions of their faith. Her home with Joseph was a sanctuary of divine presence and spiritual formation. Today’s mothers are invited to look to Mary as the perfect example to be nurturers of both body and soul, guiding their children to know, love, and serve God.

In a world full of distractions, Mary shows us the beauty of stillness, the power of silence, and the strength found in calm surrender to God's will. She was a loving wife to St. Joseph, embracing the challenges of married life with grace, teamwork, and obedience to divine direction. Her presence within the Holy Family gives modern wives and mothers a glimpse into what it means to build a home grounded in love, holiness, and trust.

To love Jesus is also to love His mother. The bond between Christ and Mary is so profound, so inseparable, that rejecting Mary is, in a way, misunderstanding the fullness of Christ’s incarnation. He chose to come to us through her, so why should we fear going to Him through her?

We can never love Mary more than Jesus does. At Cana, Jesus performed His first public miracle not because the moment called for it—but because His mother asked. She simply said, “They have no wine,” and then told the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.” Her quiet confidence moved the heart of her Son. This is the power of her intercession. Jesus listens to His mother.

If He honored her requests then, why should we doubt He still does? As Catholics, we do not worship Mary, we honor her as the Ark of the New Covenant, the vessel chosen by God, and our advocate who stands before her Son on our behalf. She leads no one away from Christ; she draws everyone closer to Him.

Mary, Our Spiritual Mother

From the Cross, Jesus gave Mary to us when He said to the beloved disciple, “Behold your mother.” In that sacred moment, Mary became the mother of all believers. Her role didn’t end at the foot of the Cross—it was only just beginning.

Today, she continues to mother us from Heaven. She wraps us in her mantle, intercedes when we are weak, and pleads for our souls before her Son. As Queen of Heaven and earth, crowned by God for her obedience and purity, she brings our petitions to Jesus, who never denies her.

We may hear voices that ask, “Why not go to Jesus directly?” But the same Jesus who came to us through Mary invites us to return to Him with her. We are not choosing between Jesus and Mary, we are choosing to love Jesus as He wants to be loved, with reverence for His holy mother.

A Mother's Day Reflection for All Time

So today, as we honor our mothers, those who are still with us, and those who have gone to the Lord, let us not forget the Mother of all. Let us model our lives, our homes, and our families after her example. Let her teach us how to pray, how to trust, how to love, and how to endure suffering with grace.

Let every mother turn to Mary for strength. Let every child run to her for comfort. Let every soul approach her confidently, knowing that she always leads us to her Son.

And with bold faith, let us proclaim:

“O Mary, Queen of Heaven, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”
Amen.
